One of the airbag sensors failed

The airbag is triggered by certain sensors. When these sensors meet a certain criteria, a signal is sent to fire the airbag. If a sensor has failed, the airbag will not be able to receive the signal when a collision occurs. Not all collisions will trigger the airbag. See collision requirements not met.

Airbag Did Not Deploy in a Collision

If a collision is above a certain speed, a sensor will complete an electrical circuit, sending a firing signal to the airbag.

An example of a sensor is a metal ball that is separated from two wires. When the vehicle collides with something, the ball breaks free of its holding(such as a magnet) and connects the two wires. The force restraining the ball is calculated to be relative to a certain force on the car. If the ball is jammed or otherwise restrained in the event of a collision, the collision will not trigger the airbag.
