Muffler baffles burnt out
The muffler uses baffles to reduce the sound of the engine. If these become damaged or otherwise ineffective, the sound of the engine will not be hindered. This will increase the noise coming from the muffler. See muffler baffles broken.

Symptoms
Muffler Abnormally Loud
If the muffler is louder than normal, the baffles may not be dampening the sound of the engine. The exhaust gases and sound waves are not hindered in their travel as much. More sound will escape, producing a louder muffler.
