Door hinges are damaged or worn

The door hinge is the part of the door that is attached to the frame of the car. The hinge allows the door to pivot off the frame. If the hinge is damaged or worn, the door may feel loose, be difficult to move, or make noise when moving. The hinges can wear out through abnormal stress or corrosion such as rust.

Symptoms

Door Feels or Sounds Loose

A damaged or worn hinge will alter the doors resting position. This can make the door shift while closed, causing a noise or making the door feel loose.

Door Squeaks

A worn or damaged hinge can draw the moving parts close together or even cause them to touch. When the door is opened or closed, the parts may rub against each other, causing a squeak or rubbing noise.

The addition of lubricant may avoid this, if the parts are so close that they hinder the movement of the door.

Door is Difficult to Move

A damaged or worn hinge can make the door difficult to move. If the parts are bent close to each other, they may create a situation where one part is directly in the path of the other. When the door is moved, the parts collide and prevent the door from moving any farther.
