Defective starter motor
A defective starter motor will be unable to turn the crankshaft and start the engine.

Symptoms
Engine Won't Start
The engine cannot start if the starter motor is defective. If, when the key is turned, the engine does not make a sound, this may be the problem.
A dead battery may also cause this. If the car can be jump started, the starter motor may be fine and the problem may lay with the battery.
