Defective oil gauge
The oil gauge shows the driver the level of oil in the engine. This gauge fluctuates during normal driving, particularly during acceleration and deceleration, as oil is circulated. If it malfunctions, the driver will not receive an accurate oil reading. This may cause too much oil to be put into the system, or prevent adding oil when the level is low. The oil dipstick provides an accurate measure of oil in the system.

Oil Gauge Fluctuates While Idling
If the oil gauge fluctuates dramatically while idling, it may be defective. The gauge may fall after coming to a stop. The oil is settling and returning to a level when not in use. Upon acceleration, the oil level picks up as it begins circulating again.
