Defective mass air flow sensor
If the mass airflow sensor malfunctions, the timing may be advance or the fuel/air mixture may be enriched beyond what it is supposed to. The engine will not be able to adjust accordingly.

Stalling
A defective mass airflow sensor will give incorrect readings of the air entering the engine. This will cause the engine to saturate the air with fuel causing the engine to stall. The timing may also advance so the spark plugs fire sooner than they are supposed to, reducing the engine power.
