A defective fuel pump may be unable to draw any or enough fuel from the fuel tank for proper engine operation.

Engine Stalls

Since the fuel pump is the device that draws fuel from the fuel tank, if it is malfunctioning, the engine may stall when it does not receive the proper amount of fuel.

If the defect is small, the engine may run for a while and stall during acceleration or at random, depending on fuel needs.

A larger defect may cause the engine to stall immediately after starting. The starter motor will turn the crankshaft, but once the engine is supposed to take over, it does not receive enough fuel to do so.
