Defective fuel pressure regulator
A defective fuel pressure regulator will be unable to maintain proper fuel pressure during varying engine loads.

Symptoms
Engine Stalls
If the engine is not receiving the proper amount of fuel, it can stall. This may be more apparent during acceleration, as more fuel and the pressure required increase to compensate for the heavier engine load.
Exhaust Blows Black Smoke
Since the fuel pressure regulator returns excess fuel back to the fuel tank, if it is malfunctioning, the excess fuel may remain in the system. When this greater amount of fuel enters the combustion chamber, the improper proportions cause black smoke to exit the exhaust.
