Engine Revs, but Vehicle Slows
When the transmission gear slips, the engine no longer faces the resistance of turning the driveshaft. The engine will speed up as a result of the reduction in resistance and maintenance of fuel. The drive wheels will be disconnected from the engine, causing the vehicle to coast under its momentum.
