Short in speedometer wiring
A defect in the speedometer wiring will prevent the proper signals from being transfered. The vehicle speed sensor reads the speed of the transmission or wheels, and sends a small electrical current. If the current is restricted, the proper information will not be transfered. This can prevent the speedometer from moving, or a digital odometer from registering miles traveled.
