Ignition Switch
The ignition switch can refer to one of two parts in the ignition system. One is the slot in which the key is inserted. The second is the part that completes the circuit allowing the engine to start. The ignition switch typically has four modes: off, on, start, and accessories. "Off" refers to a state in which the electrical circuit is disconnected. "On" refers to a state in which the engine is running. "Start" refers to the state in which the engine is started. "Accessories" refers to a state in which the engine is not running, but accessories like the radio.
