Shock absorbers dampen the impact of bumps in the road. They are filled with an oil or gas that acts as a resistance to the force of the bump. If the oil or gas is leaking out, or is reduced, the contour of the road can be felt much more easily.

Vehicle Shakes Over Bumps

A vehicle shaking over bumps in the road can be normal. The shock absorber's job is to absorb the shock from bumps. If there is an increase in the amount felt going over the same road, the shock absorber may be leaking.

It should be noted that if you are feeling bumps on a smooth road, it is not generally the result of the shock absorbers. It is likely due to the steering or suspension systems, or tires and wheels.
