A blown head gasket is severe damage to the head gasket that can create many problems if not addressed. A blown head gasket can no longer seal one or more of the cylinder heads to the engine block.

Causes

Engine Overheating

As the engine runs, it heats up. If it is not cooled properly, the heat may cause parts to expand such as the cylinder heads or head gasket. The pressure exerted against the head gasket as the parts expand may cause breaks in the head gasket.
