Door hinges or friction glide are worn out

The door hinges or friction glides, also called friction stays, can wear out over time. As the door opens and closes, two or more parts rub together. This can produce a very small amount of wear. Over time, this wear can build. If the parts are not lubricated, the parts will have a greater amount of friction during each movement. This can alter the position of the door in the frame, causing it to feel loose when closed or open.

Symptoms

Door Feels or Sounds Loose

If the door feels or sounds loose, the hinge or friction glide, on some vehicles, may be worn out. The wear on the hinge will create additional stress on itself by supporting the weight of the door. The connection of the door to the frame will not be as secure, causing the door to feel or sound loose.

Door Squeaks

A worn hinge can also produce a squeak, grind or rubbing sound as the parts rub against one another. The hinges may lack lubrication.
