A defective ignition switch will prevent the vehicle starting. It will be unable to engage the starter motor.

Symptoms

Engine Won't Start

If the engine is not starting, listen to the sounds coming from it when attempting to start. If no sounds occur, a defective ignition switch is likely the problem as the starter motor is not receiving power.

Engine Stalls After Starting

If the engine starts up, but stalls when the key is turned to the "on" position, the ignition switch may only be completing the circuit for a moment. When the key is turned, the circuit is broken, and the car stalls.
