Stripped speedometer drive gear

The speedometer driver gear measures both the vehicle's speed and the distance traveled. The gear is used with analog speedometer and odometer. If the gear is stripped, it will not be able to accurately rotate with the engine.

Symptoms

Speedometer Displays the Wrong Speed

If the drive gear is stripped, the speedometer will show the wrong speed. The speed shown will most likely be less than the actual speed. The needle may even rise and fall rapidly. This would be caused by the gear catching and releasing. When it catches, the speedometer will rise to the actual speed. As the gear slips, the speedometer will fall.

Odometer Does Not Move

If the odometer does not move, or moves periodically, the drive gear may be skipping or not catching at all. If the gear is skipping, the odometer will move some times, but not others. If the gear is not catching at all, the odometer will never move.
