Oil is low

The engine needs a certain amount of oil to function properly. The oil circulates through the engine, lubricating the various parts, and returns to the oil pan where the cycle starts again. If the oil level is low, the parts will not receive enough oil, and the cycle will be slowed. This can lead to serious engine damage.
