Defective speedometer cable

A defective speedometer cable will prevent accurate vehicle speed data from being transfer to the driver via the speedometer.

Symptoms

Speedometer Doesn't Move

If the speedometer does not move while the vehicle is in motion, the speedometer cable may be defective or even detached.

Speedometer Displays the Wrong Speed

If the wrong speed is display, or the speedometer varies while driving at a constant rate, the speedometer cable may be sending the wrong data. The cable may bind at certain points, then release, causing the speed to suddenly drop as it gets jammed or rise as it breaks free.
