Defective oil pressure sensor

A defective oil pressure sensor will misread the oil pressure level. This can cause an "Oil Pressure Warning Light" to be illuminated when the oil pressure is normal, or fail to warn the driver when oil pressure falls. See low oil pressure.

Symptoms

Oil Gauge Does Not Move

Some vehicles have gauges that measure the oil pressure. If the oil pressure sensor is defective, the gauge will not receive an electrical current and will not move.

Oil Pressure Warning Light is On

When oil pressure drops below a certain range, the Oil Pressure Warning Light is illuminated. If the oil pressure sensor is malfunctioning, the signal used to trigger the light will be altered. The light may come on when oil pressure is normal, or may not come on when oil pressure falls.
