Defective ignition coils

The ignition coils amplify power from the battery so the spark plugs can fire. If a coil malfunctions, a cylinder may not be able to fire. This can lead to stalling.

Engine Stalls

If an ignition coil is defective, a spark plug will not be able to fire. This will cause the engine to stall. The stalling is more likely to occur after starting the vehicle, or while idling. During acceleration or high speeds, the momentum of the other cylinders may keep the engine moving. It will, however, result in a reduction of engine power.
