Coolant drops below the safe range the engine needs to operate

The engine requires a certain amount of coolant for proper operation. If the coolant level is insufficient, the engine may overheat as not enough coolant is circulating to cool it. Some vehicles have a low coolant warning light to indicate a drop in the coolant level.
