Anti-Lock Brakes

An anti-lock brake system, or ABS, is a system of brakes that pumps the brakes at a rate much faster that a human could. The idea behind anti-lock brakes is that the wheels don't lock up, eliminating the reliance on friction between the road and tires alone to bring the vehicle to a stop. The wheels stop for a brief movement while the brake is applied and then is released before being applied again. This process repeats itself until the vehicle has come to a stop. ABS brake system can bring a vehicle to a stop in a shorter distance than wheel locking brakes.
