A gauge is at a point needing attention

The various gauges on the dashboard measure a number of things. For example, the temperature gauge measures the coolant temperature. Each gauge has a range that is considered normal. If the gauge rises to the danger zone(usually marked in red), or falls below a certain threshold, warning lights may appear.

Causes

Low Oil Pressure

High Coolant Temperature

As the coolant circulates through the engine, it heats up. If something is restricting the flow through the system, or the coolant level is lower than it should be, the engine temperature will rise and the temperature gauge will reflect it. This is dangerous and it can lead to the engine over heating and cause serious damage.
